The word ‘icon’ derives from Bizantic and East – Christian
Art. It is a religious painting, which shows Saint people and biblical or
liturgical scenes. From few years in Sanok there is an icon workshop. It is
situated by the local pedestranized street, nearby the bench of a Good
Soldier Szwejk. We went to that special place so that we could tell you more
about the ways the icons are painted as well as about some interesting
issues concerning their painting.

Everything started
three years ago in 2002. However, it was only an idea. It was a year later
that Mrs Jolanta Pełka officially opened the workshop. Few days after the
opening, Jolanta died in a car accident. Agnieszka Marosz, Jolanta’s friend,
and Hanna Pełka, Jolanta’s mother, decided to continue what Jolanta started.
It was really hard at the beginning. Although both of them helped Jolanta
paint icons, they weren’t as experienced as she was. The biggest problem
were the faces, which are the most important parts in the icons.
Theoretically, it was a piece of cake, but practically they had a lot to
learn. Despite the difficulties the workshop still exists and the icons grow
on their value in Poland and abroad.
